arrows, defeats and milkshakes is an exhibition that takes errors in new directions, opens the way to defeats and skakes up sense in a collective manner. As Lacan says, our acts that lack are acts that succeed and our stumbled-over words are words that disclose.
Participating in errors, deceits and mistakes (the English title of the magazine) has led to a new natural linguistic mutation. Stumbling over the title of the magazine itself and letting words follow their course along the rails of tromperie has allowed arrows , defeats and milkshakes has come to life. A title that straight away is mutated into something different by the actions of people who have participated in the proliferation of such a virus of signifiers. (Thanks to Max Margolis, Yane Calovski, Tom Luyckx, Sean Rogg, Mathias Geoffroy and Steve Roden who developed the table with me.) It has become a detached and autonomous body, an errant erratum that leads to unexpected arrivals.
Steve Roden's project is a score that reinterprets Marcel Duchamp's Erratum Musical , following chance procedures, translating Duchamp's original text erroneously and in an intuitive manner. Thus Roden's new sound piece, ear/radiant music/all/is , can be experienced between the space of the page and its interactive sonic counterpart on the web at www.arrowsdefeatsmilkshakes.tk . This site is indeed the web ‘extension' of the exhibition where other works can also be found.
Likewise, Atsunobu Kohira 's erroneous series ? , which occupies the whole space of the page as if it were dictated by a numerical horror vacui , is then embodied in a sound piece at the same web address.
Christope Bruno 's software, Logo Hallucination , is an engine that scans the internet in order to protect us against subliminal forms of advertising hidden in the visual patterns of images. And finally there is the chorus piece by Yane Calovski and fos (part of a work made for the Brandts Museum in Denmark ) titled An Early Lost Play . The score was performed by a local amateur chorus and is the result of a collage made with music by Brahms and a speech given by the Danish Prime Minister on the occasion of the ‘Mohamed drawing crises'.
Therefore, given the defeat of every certainty, and the illusion acknowledged in the optical schema of Lacan's diagram of the flower vase, there is nothing else to do but follow the arrows along the routes of mistakes. And let it not be that the truth is hidden in a milkshake!
